Preparing for pregnancy safely
A preconception health checklist based on trusted medical guidance.
Why prepare ahead?
Health before conception can affect fertility and early fetal development. A preconception visit can review chronic conditions, medicines, history, dental health and vaccines.
Folic acid
Most people who could become pregnant are advised to get at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, starting before pregnancy when possible. Different doses require clinician guidance.
Medicines, supplements and vaccines
Do not stop medicines for chronic conditions without advice. Bring a full list of medicines, vitamins, herbs and treatment products to your visit.
Lifestyle and environment
Keep activity appropriate, sleep enough, eat a varied diet and reduce unnecessary exposure to tobacco smoke or workplace chemicals.
